The Eighties Are Back With Rock Of Ages On Broadway   by Al Terry

If Constantine Maroulis was one of your favorite American Idol contestants, or even if he wasn’t, you will definitely be transfixed once you watch him in Rock Of Ages on Broadway. A musical that brings together the best of the ‘big hair and slashed denims’ era, it tells the story of good old 1980s on the Sunset Strip in Los Angeles. Small town girl Sherrie (Amy Spander) meets wannabe guitarist Drew (Maroulis) who sweeps the floors of the legendary Bourbon Room club. While Sherrie aspires to be a movie star some day, it is love at first sight for both her and Drew. But a greedy real estate dealer want to demolish the Bourbon Room and all the other joints on the Strip to build it into a more respectable neighborhood. Faced with a tragic end to an era of rock and roll, the owner of the club Dennis (Adam Dannheisser) decides to hold one last performance in an attempt to rescue the space. The musical reaches a climax on the night of the concert where Drew gets to be part of the opening act. But unfortunately at the same time the lead singer Stacee Jaxx of the main band Arsenal makes a move on his beloved Sherrie.

Sherrie succumbs to Stacee’s sinister charm, and she and Drew end up losing each other. But there is light at the end of the tunnel, and it is reached after many unexpected turns and twists in the plot. And rather than spelling them out here, you should go watch Rock Of Ages on Broadway just to enjoy this rollercoaster ride down memory lane.

Directed by Kristin Hangii, Rock of Ages comes with power-packed performances of hits from bands like Bon Jovi, Poison, Whitesnake, Twisted Sister and Journey. The stellar solo performances have you dancing in the aisles and singing out with all your heart. It’s a time of nostalgia and you end up enjoying yourself thoroughly even if you didn’t intend to. And no matter how cheesy the clothes and the make-up may seem, you can’t deny that the 1980s gave us the greatest musical acts of all time.

Maroulis stands out as a powerful performer with an extensive vocal range. Yet he plays the role of Drew with a kind of languid ease. And he is matched by the spunky Spander playing the role of Sherrie to perfection. The rest of the cast of Rock Of Ages on Broadway that also includes James Carpinello as Jaxx and Mitchell Jarvis who plays the narrator, seem well suited to their roles. For the musical arrangements which form the core of the performances, all credit goes to Ethan Popp and his team. And the make-up, hair and costumes deserve a special mention for all the attention that has been given to recreating the eighties. If you thought that Broadway only had stuffy classical performances, this is one musical that will make you believe that there’s always something for everyone.

You can catch Rock of Ages on Broadway till September 7 and tickets are available at the Box Office on 256 West 47th Street. However, if you are too busy to go and pick up the tickets yourself, you can also order them online on one of the Broadway portals.
